Image JPEG image RHD: macroscopic findings
Macroscopic abnormalities are not always obvious in rabbits that have died from RHD. Histopathology reveals severe underlying pathology in the liver, often accompanied by other organs. RHD was confirmed in this rabbit.

Image JPEG image Scarred pitted kidney
Focal, depressed areas of the kidney are typical of infection with Encephalitozoon cuniculi. The disease causes granulomatous lesions in the kidneys that become pitted and scarred with fibrotic areas

Image Small intestinal tympany
If the small intestine becomes occluded by a foreign body (often a pellet of compressed fur, yellow arrow), the stomach (white arrow) and small intestine that is proximal to the obstruction (turquoise arrow) become dilated and tympanitic and the intestine that is distal to the obstruction is collapsed and empty.

Image Spleen in a rabbit with RHD2
The spleen must be found during a post-mortem examination. Lifting the stomach and reflecting it dorsolaterally the spleen can be found, attached to the stomach by the lesser omentum. In this case it is at least double the size it should be. This is a sign of RHD.

This rabbit did not have RHD. The picture shows the small size of an adult rabbit's spleen.

Image Splenomegaly
An enlarged spleen may be seen in cases of RHD. There are few other causes of splenomegaly in this species. Histologically the changes can range from moderate congestion to haemorrhage, deposition of fibrin, lymphocytolysis and necrosis of lymphoid tissue.

Image JPEG image Subtle macroscopic signs of RHD
Gross post-mortem signs are not always obvious in rabbits that died from RHD and this rabbit is an example. The liver is slightly enlarged and close inspection with a hand lens did show a mottled appearance. Histopathology showed characteristic hepatocellular necrosis and PCR testing confirmed the presence of RHDV2.

Image JPEG image White spots in liver
Several disease can cause white spots in the liver. Hepatic coccidiosis is the most likely cause.

Image Troff document Yellow fat
This image shows a uterus and mesometrial fat that was removed during ovariohysterectomy. Some rabbits carry a gene that results in deficiency of an enzyme to break down carotenoid pigments. The fat is a yellow colour, especially if the diet is rich in carotenoids e.g. carrots. The condition is not obvious during clinical examination except that the incisor teeth may have a yellow tinge.
