Yellow fat

This image shows a uterus and mesometrial fat that was removed during ovariohysterectomy. Some rabbits carry a gene that results in deficiency of an enzyme to break down carotenoid pigments. The fat is a yellow colour, especially if the diet is rich in carotenoids e.g. carrots. The condition is not obvious during clinical examination except that the incisor teeth may have a yellow tinge.
