Wild rabbit in Portugal

This picture was taken in Portugal, which is on the Iberian peninsula where the domestic rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) originates. The rabbit was living in a warren in a dry arid climate with no fresh grass or shoots to eat. There had been no rain for weeks. Rabbits are able to withstand these conditions because of their gastrintestinal physiology that allows them to utilise fibrous food.
