Favourite forage

A diet of leafy green plants and vegetables with good quality hay constantly on offer is ideal for most rabbits.  Many suitable plants can be found as weeds in the garden, under hedgerows, on verges or alongside footpaths and will provide excellent free rabbit food. The plants are palatable, high in fibre, balanced in calcium and phosphorus and soft enough for rabbits with dental problems to eat. The moisture content is high, which is good for rabbits, especially if they have urinary tract problems.

Choosing four or five familiar plants to pick each day overcomes concerns about toxicity.  Knowing where the plants grow in abundance is an advantage. Fresh grass is the first choice of plants to pick each day. Finding some dandelions is second choice. There are many species of dandelion with slightly different leaves. All are safe.

The plants listed below are my favourite plants to look for. This choice is based on the section in Yorkshire. The choice may be different and wider in other areas of the country.
