Pus from a retrobulbar abscess
-
This image shows the left upper arcade of cheek teeth in the mouth of a rabbit with a retrobulbar abscess affecting the left eye. When the picture was taken, pressure was applied to the globe, which pushed pus out of the abscess into the mouth alongside the infected tooth. Applying pressure to the globe at the same time as examining the oral cavity is helpful in the investigation of retrobulbar abscesses. The site that the pus is coming from helps to identify where the infection originates, and which teeth are affected. In this rabbit, there is also a spur on a lower cheek tooth that was damaging the tongue. The crowns of the lower cheek teeth are not long, but they are very curved, which has led to the development of a spur.

Retrobulbar abscess
-
This rabbit had an abscess affecting the apices of the caudal maxillary cheek teeth. The eye is being pushed out of the socket by the abscess. Only one eye is affected, and it is still salvageable. The next step is radiography and/or CT scanning. Examining the teeth under anaesthetic is important both prior to and during surgery. This case responded well to abscess surgery without enucleating the eye.

Dental spur causing an abscess
-
This rabbit had an abscess on his right cheek that was caused by a spike on the lower 4th cheek tooth penetrating the oral mucosa. Amazingly, the rabbit was eating but on the left side only. The slanted wear on the incisors indicates this. The rabbit responded well to having the tooth trimmed and all the pus removed from the abscess plus a course of injectable penicillin and streptomycin.
